Background of the Study
Pragmatic markers are subtle linguistic tools that help organize discourse, manage turns, and signal speakers’ attitudes. In Nigerian Pidgin, these markers are particularly prominent among urban youth in Lagos, where informal and dynamic communication prevails. Nigerian Pidgin serves as a flexible medium, allowing speakers to blend indigenous expressions with global slang, thereby creating a vibrant, ever-evolving language (Balogun, 2023). Urban youth utilize pragmatic markers to smooth transitions, emphasize points, and indicate shifts in conversational tone. These markers include particles, interjections, and fillers that contribute to the overall coherence and pragmatics of discourse. The rapid digitalization of communication channels and the influence of social media have further transformed the use of these markers, making them central to identity formation and social interaction among youth (Okoro, 2024). This study assesses the role of pragmatic markers in Nigerian Pidgin as used by urban youth in Lagos, investigating how these markers enhance the fluidity and effectiveness of digital and face-to-face communication while also exploring the potential for ambiguity.
Statement of the Problem
Despite their importance, the use of pragmatic markers in Nigerian Pidgin among urban youth remains underexplored. The dynamic nature of these markers, influenced by digital trends and informal speech, can lead to ambiguity and inconsistent meaning across different contexts (Balogun, 2023). As communication shifts rapidly in the digital era, the variability in pragmatic marker usage may undermine clear and effective discourse, especially when messages are shared across diverse audiences (Okoro, 2024). This study aims to address this gap by systematically evaluating the role of pragmatic markers in facilitating conversation and managing discourse, thereby highlighting their impact on communication clarity among Lagos youths.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it investigates the role of pragmatic markers in Nigerian Pidgin communication among urban youth in Lagos, providing insights into modern discourse management. The findings will benefit linguists, educators, and cultural analysts by highlighting how pragmatic markers contribute to conversational coherence and identity formation. Recommendations from the study aim to enhance clarity and reduce ambiguity in informal digital and face-to-face communications (Balogun, 2023; Okoro, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to assessing pragmatic markers in Nigerian Pidgin among urban youth in Lagos and does not extend to formal communication or other age groups.
